Hcwutl32.dll is a dynamic link library file that is used by Hauppauge Computer Works’ Library of Utility Functions. This file is included in almost every installation of applications or drivers from Hauppauge Computer Works.
Hauppauge manufactures electronic video hardware and peripherals for personal computers. However, the company is best known for the WinTV line of TV tuner cards and capture cards for personal computers.
Hauppauge’s leading product is WinTV2000 which is a television tuning and recording software application. The WinTV capture card that comes with this application is also a leading product. Hcwutl32.dll is an included module with these products. The hcwutl32.dll file is bundled along with these products when they are installed on clients’ machines.
Hcwutl32.dll is also included in the installation of other applications like WinTV Scheduler and WinTV Radio, and is responsible for all utility functions.
However, changes in the market have also led to changes in hcwutl32’s capabilities. While this file remains the primary mover for the application functions, certain aspects have been changed. Some functions have been turned over to other components to allow users to have multiple Hauppauge cards in one system.
Because of this, machines may experience certain hardware and software issues. Listed below are some of the issues that users of Hauppauge products may experience. Also included are the suggested solutions.
Hcwutl32.dll is missing when attempting to run WinTV.
This hcwutl32.dll not found error may be caused by faulty installation of WinTV drivers. To resolve this issue, uninstall your current WinTV drivers. If you are having difficulty uninstalling certain programs, you can use Perfect Uninstaller to remove these stubborn programs from your system.
After you successfully uninstall your old WinTV drivers, double check if you need updated drivers. If you do, download the updated drivers and install these on your system.

Card driver installation hangs
Check the card first. The issue may be related to the card and not to the drivers.
Check the slot. If the issue is not with the card, the slot may be the cause of the problem.
If the problem is with the card drivers, uninstall the card drivers. You may do this by removing the device from the Device Manager in the Control Panel. Ensure that all older drivers and failed installation files are also removed.
Reboot your PC.
Let Windows XP detect the card. Download updated drivers and install these.

Download the WDM drivers from the Hauppauge website. Be sure to include the clean sweep program that Hauppauge has to remove all Hauppauge drivers from your system. Before reinstalling, make sure that you have DirectX 8.1 installed on your system. Download DirectX 8.1 if you cannot find this in your system. Once you have the correct DirectX file, run the Hardware Wizard again.
